Why we are here

BrokenStitch works in Logan. This is not a place we simply operate in. It is home to many families, communities and young people, and it has a history that began long before us. We name this place: Logan, Queensland, along the river and the ridges. We honour those who have gone, and those who sit with us now. Elders matter because young people matter. The people who came before us matter because the people who come after us matter.

Children matter here. That includes the ones who have made poor choices. We do not ask anyone to pretend those choices were wise, and we do not build our work on excuses. A wrong decision does not cancel the fact that a young person still has a night to get through, and still has a future that can be larger than that night. Our job is to respond to the need in front of us — not to recast the young person as a victim, and not to claim we can fix a life in one conversation.

Logan holds a lot of young people at once. Pressure arrives from more than one direction: home, school, money, and systems that reach them earlier than they should. Some of those young people will never be referred to us. Some will. We do not get to choose only the easy ones. Every young person we are able to stand beside is owed the same standard — someone who turns up in the published window and takes them seriously.

Some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people here meet systems earlier, and more often, than they should. We do not ignore that. We do not treat culture, identity, or Country as the problem. We believe a young person should know where they come from, know who stands behind them, and know that their future is bigger than the circumstances they are facing today.

BrokenStitch comes here to support young people — not to speak for communities, claim the culture, or pretend we have all the answers. We listen. We learn. We show up. Where a young person needs someone to stand beside them, we want to be there. We come as a guest. We do not claim this Country. We do not speak for them. We listen to families.
